'Fateh moment': Mohammed Shami hails Indian army's 'Operation Sindoor'

Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami joined other sports personalities in praising the Indian armed forces for executing Operation Sindoor on May 7, a retaliatory strike against terror targets following the Pahalgam attack that killed 26 civilians. The Indian Air Force conducted precision strikes on nine terror launchpads across Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir, targeting facilities of banned groups Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba, without entering Pakistani airspace.“The Indian Armed Forces turned adversity into a powerful Fateh moment. Their courage and valor in the face of danger have made us all proud,” Shami posted on his social media platform X.Several cricket personalities showed their support for the military action through social media posts. Former and current players including Gautam Gambhir, Aakash Chopra, Harbhajan Singh, Suresh Raina, and Jhulan Goswami expressed solidarity.“Agar koi aap par patthar phenke toh uspar Phool Phenko, Lekin Gamle ke saath. Jai Hind #OperationSindoor, what an apt name,” posted Virendra Sehwag.“#OperationSindoor is Bharat’s response to the brutal killing of our innocent brothers in Pahalgam. JAI HIND,” wrote Harbhajan Singh.“Together we stand. Jai Hind ,” stated former opener Aakash Chopra.

NEW DELHI: Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Shubman Gill achieved a remarkable milestone by becoming the third IPL captain to amass over 500 runs in a season before turning 26, joining the ranks of Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer. This feat came during GT’s match against Mumbai Indians (MI) at Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday, where Gill contributed 43 runs from 46 deliveries, including three boundaries and one six in a rain-affected chase of 156 runs.In IPL 2025, Gill has accumulated 508 runs across 11 matches, maintaining an impressive average of 50.80 and a strike rate exceeding 152, including five half-centuries with a top score of 90. Currently aged 25 years and 241 days, he stands as the season’s third-highest run-scorer.Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!Virat Kohli pioneered this achievement in 2013 at age 24, during his inaugural captaincy season. He finished as the third-highest run-getter with 634 runs in 16 matches, averaging 45.28 with a strike rate of 138.73, including six fifties and a highest score of 99.Shreyas achieved this distinction in 2020 at age 25 whilst leading Delhi Capitals (DC). He accumulated 519 runs in 17 matches, averaging 34.60 with a strike rate above 123, including three fifties and an unbeaten 88. He finished fourth in the season’s run-scoring charts and was instrumental in DC’s journey to the final.GT chose to field after winning the toss. MI posted 155/8 in their allocated overs, highlighted by Will Jacks’s 53 off 35 balls and Suryakumar Yadav’s 35 off 24 balls, sharing a 71-run partnership.Sai Kishore led GT’s bowling effort with 2/34, whilst Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Arshad Khan, Rashid Khan and Gerald Coetzee each claimed one wicket. The chase proved dramatic for both sides. Despite losing Sai Sudharsan early, GT recovered through a 72-run partnership between Gill (43 off 46) and Jos Buttler (30 off 27).Rain interrupted play in the 14th over with GT at 107/2, leading via DLS method. Post-interruption, Jasprit Bumrah (2/19) and Trent Boult (2/22) reduced GT to 132/6 by the 18th over when rain returned, leaving GT trailing.

At UNSC huddle, Pakistan faces tough questions

NEW DELHI: The United Nations Security Council’s closed-door meeting on rising India-Pakistan tensions expectedly failed to yield any substantive outcome for Pakistan. Indian govt sources said Pakistan’s efforts to internationalise the issue made little headway as UNSC advised Islamabad to resolve issues bilaterally with India and sought accountability for the Pahalgam attack, while expressing concern over Pakistan’s nuclear rhetoric and missile tests. In the 90-minute meeting, the member-states are learnt to have condemned the April 22 attack and posed “tough questions” about the likely involvement of UN-proscribed Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba.No takers at UNSC meet for Pak’s false-flag narrative While views were expressed individually by some after the consultations, the Council didn’t collectively make any statement. The least Pakistan would have hoped for is an oral statement by the Council president.Former Indian permanent representative to UN Syed Akbaruddin said Pakistan’s quest to resurrect an agenda item which has not been deliberated upon formally since 1965 by Council expectedly didn’t take off. Pakistan is a non-permanent UNSC member currently.“The lack of a response by the Council to Pakistan’s briefing is a vindication of Indian stance,” said Akbaruddin, who was India’s ambassador to the UN when Pakistan last sought closed-door consultations through China in 2019. That was after India revoked J&K’s special status in Aug 2019.The 2019 meeting too had ended without any outcome or formal statement even though China had strongly pushed for it. Closed-door meetings comprise informal discussions that are held not in Council room but in an adjacent chamber with limited number of delegates. For Pakistan, as in 2019, the latest meeting too was more an exercise in managing public perception than advancing any meaningful discussions, even though the consultations were held under the India-Pakistan Question that relates to J&K and not under, as it was meant to be initially, the generic ‘Threats to International Peace and Security’ agenda item.In the meeting, according to sources who spoke on condition of anonymity, members disapproved of false flag narrative initially propounded by Pakistan and asked about the likely involvement of LeT in the attack. There were questions about targeting of tourists based on their religious identity. “There was condemnation of the attack and recognition of the need for accountability. Some members specifically brought up the targeting of tourists on basis of their religious faith,” said a source, adding many members expressed concern that Pakistan’s missile tests and nuclear rhetoric were escalatory factors. Before the meeting, some Council members were reported to have backed the idea of an independent international investigation into the attack. According to the Security Council Report, China and Greece appeared to have already indicated – before the meeting – their support for such an investigation. Such a probe though will need the consent of both India and Pakistan.Pakistan issued a statement after the meet in which it said Council members expressed “deep concern” over the risk of escalation and urged restraint. It also claimed several members underscored that the J&K dispute remained the root cause of regional instability.

Inquiry panel confirms cash found at Justice Varma's house

NEW DELHI: The three-judge inquiry panel’s damning report to CJI Sanjiv Khanna has confirmed that a huge amount of cash was found in a storeroom at Justice Yashwant Varma’s Tughlaq Crescent residence on March 14, a finding that negates the judge’s strenuous claim to the contrary. The report repudiates Justice Varma’s repeated statements claiming innocence about the discovery of money from a room within his official residence. Adhering to the principle of natural justice, CJI sent the report to the judge & sought his response within two days. The CJI, who retires on May 13, appears firm on taking the issue to its logical end.In its lengthy report, the panel comprising Punjab and Haryana CJ Sheel Nagu, Himachal Pradesh CJ G S Sandhawalia and Karnataka HC’s Justice Anu Sivaraman unequivocally said a huge stash of cash was indeed found in a room on the premises of the judge’s residence by the first responders to a fire incident there. The panel, which examined 50 witnesses, including Delhi Police commissioner, Delhi Fire Services chief and staff as well as securitymen deployed at his house, said most witnesses present at the site on March 14 confirmed that a portion of the cash stashed in the room had caught fire when Justice Varma was in Bhopal.Report mentions ‘mysterious disappearance of unburnt cash’ Sources said the probe panel report mentioned the mysterious disappearance of unburnt cash, as seen by security guards posted at judge Yashwant Varma’s bungalow, from the room. Delhi HC CJ D K Upadhyay had also referred to the vanishing cash in his report to CJI Khanna on March 21.When Justice Upadhyay had shown the video of burning cash in the storeroom to Justice Varma, the latter had “expressed apprehension about some conspiracy against him”. The videos and photographs of burning cash, given to the Delhi HC CJ by the police commissioner, were handed over to CJI Khanna only on March 20, six days after the incident. The Delhi HC CJ remained unconvinced by Justice Varma’s defence and had told CJI Khanna that “the entire matter warrants a deeper probe”. The CJI constituted the inquiry panel on March 22 and the SC collegium repatriated Justice Varma to Allahabad HC the same day with the instruction that he be not given any judicial work. The inquiry panel also examined call data records of Justice Varma’s phones. In his response, Justice Varma had said, “I state unequivocally that no cash was ever placed in that storeroom either by me or any of my family members and strongly denounce the suggestion that the alleged cash belonged to us. The very idea or suggestion that this cash was kept or stored by us is totally preposterous.” He had also said that after arriving from Bhopal on the evening of March 15, he had inspected the storeroom and found no cash there. He persisted with the denial even when the video and photographs of burning cash were uploaded on the SC’s official website. “I was totally shocked to see the contents of the video since that depicted something which was not found on site as I had seen it. It was this which prompted me to observe that this clearly appeared to be a conspiracy to frame and malign me,” Justice Varma had said.

Two government school teachers give high-flyers a ride in the clouds

TIRUPATI/VISAKHAPATNAM: Two govt schoolteachers sponsored air trips recently for seven high-scorers in Andhra Pradesh’s Class 10 board exams, fulfilling a pre-test pledge to encourage academic excellence. Most students were from poor families. The heart-warming initiative saw five girls from Beluguppa mandal in Anantapur district take their first flight for securing over 550 marks out of 600 in the SSC exams, whose results were declared late last month.Mandal education officer (MEO) Malla Reddy – a senior teacher himself before he was assigned a supervisory role – sponsored the trip. Collector V Vinod Kumar assisted in the initiative.“Most of us are from BPL families. None had even boarded a car before in our lives,” said T Madhushree, one of the five who took the Bengaluru-Hyderabad flight last week. Her batchmate Y Eswari echoed the heady feeling. “Malla Reddy Sir had told us that all students who secure 550 plus would get to travel in a flight. I have never taken a plane and that challenge inspired me to score better in my SSC exams,” said Eswari.Reddy explained his novel idea. “All five students are from extremely poor families but displayed excellence in SSC exams. If teachers and headmasters of govt schools come up with innovative measures, these students will outperform others,” Reddy said.In Vizianagaram, teacher Maradana Satya Rao played Santa Claus to Sangireddy Vivek and T Revanth — accompanied by their parents. Vivek scored 593, topping the district and Revanth stood third with 591 marks. Both are from different schools in Merakamudidam mandal but took the Vijayawada-Visakhapatnam flight on May 5.“The (air) trip was a realisation of boundless opportunities and an affirmation that academic and career excellence can take us to great heights,” Vivek said. His mother said she had never imagined she would ever fly and credited her son and Rao for the experience.Revanth confessed that he initially thought teacher Rao’s pre-exam declaration to sponsor air trips was merely intended to “encourage students to work hard”. “We did not expect it to become a reality.” the youngster said.

Iran foreign minister takes first strike in Pakistan as ‘mediator’, to land in Delhi today

File photo of Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi

ISLAMABAD: Pahalgam’s shadow loomed over Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi’s diplomacy overdrive in Islamabad this week as he projected his country as a potential mediator in the escalating India-Pakistan conflict. The move came ahead of his scheduled visit to Delhi on Wednesday, and in the face of India’s refusal to accept third-party mediation. While the official word was that the May 5 talks were “routine”, sources said the focus of Araghchi’s meetings with President Asif Ali Zardari, PM Shehbaz Sharif and his Pakistan counterpart Ishaq Dar was the fallout of the terrorist attack on tourists in J&K’s Pahalgam a fortnight ago.Amid Iran’s bid to positioning itself as a mediator in an attempt to avert a broader conflict between the nuclear-armed neighbours, speculation was rife in Pakistan about the impartiality, leverage and ability of any third country to untangle a conflict fuelled by decades of hostility. In Islamabad, the Iranian minister purportedly stressed the need for “fraternal dialogue” between India and Pakistan. His Delhi trip, officially as a delegate to an economic conference, could also pivot to escalating cross-border tensions, sources said.Iran styles itself as a regional conciliator, citing its proximity to Pakistan and shared cultural heritage with both countries to push for de-escalation.Some see Iran’s mediation bid as resting on shaky foundations. Its stronger ties with Pakistan, built on a shared border and joint security and trade interests, overshadow its more limited engagement with India.Delhi, long opposed to outside involvement in Kashmir disputes, has dismissed any link between Araghchi’s visit and the crisis. Critics in Pakistan see Tehran’s moves as a grab for regional relevance rather than a viable peace plan, unlikely to succeed without a proposal both sides can stomach.

Avneet Kaur spotted in stands during Gujarat Titans vs Mumbai Indians match

A social media controversy erupted when Virat Kohli‘s Instagram account liked a photo of actor Avneet Kaur, who was later spotted at the IPL 2025 match between Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans at Wankhede Stadium on Thursday. The incident led to widespread speculation until Kohli clarified it was an algorithm error, which was subsequently mocked by singer Rahul Vaidya.Avneet Kaur’s presence at the stadium drew significant attention from social media users and camera operators during the match, particularly due to the recent Instagram interaction incident.Kohli addressed the situation through an Instagram story, stating: “I’d like to clarify that while clearing my feed, it appears the algorithm may have mistakenly registered an interaction. There was absolutely no intent behind it. I request that no unnecessary assumptions be made. Thank you for your understanding.”The social media buzz temporarily subsided after Kohli’s explanation, but singer Rahul Vaidya reignited the discussion by posting satirical stories on Instagram.Vaidya mockingly commented: “Main kehna chahta hoon ki aaj ke baad aisa ho sakta hai ki algorithm bohot saare photos like karde jo maine nahi kare. So, jo bhi ladki ho, please don’t do PR around it because it is not my mistake. It is Instagram’s mistake, okay?”The singer later claimed that Kohli had blocked him on Instagram following his posts. He continued his satirical take on the situation with another statement.“So guys, Virat Kohli has blocked me, as you all know. I think that too is an Instagram glitch, Virat Kohli didn’t block me. Instagram k algorithm ne bola hoga Virat Kohli ko ki, ‘Ek kaam kar, main tere behalf pe Rahul Vaidya ko block kardeti hoon’. Hain na Right?” he concluded.Multiple social media users shared photos and tweets of Avneet Kaur in the stadium stands during the match, with some noting her apparent support for Rohit Sharma. The incident generated significant social media engagement, with various users sharing photos and commenting on Kaur’s presence at the IPL match.

TCS gives 100% quarterly variable pay to 70% staff; remaining workforce sees lower numbers
TCS leadership discussed postponing the yearly salary increase during April. (AI image)

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India’s largest IT services firm, has distributed 100% quarterly variable compensation to 70% of its workforce. The remaining staff received variable payments at reduced levels, based on their business units’ performance outcomes.
“We have paid out 100% QVA (Quarterly Variable Allowance) to over 70% of the company. For all other grades, the QVA depends on their unit’s business performance. This is in line with our standard practice across quarters,” TCS said officially.
“Many employees from business units with good performance such as BFSI (banking, financial services and insurance) have been granted 100% of the variable pay while those segments or verticals which have reported poor growth performance have given their employees lower payouts,” an employee told ET.
The company leadership discussed postponing the yearly salary increase during April, considering the uncertain economic climate. “We will decide within the year when to make that happen,” stated Milind Lakkad, chief HR officer, during this year’s quarterly results announcement.

The organisational hierarchy at the Tata subsidiary begins with Y grade for trainees, followed by Systems Engineer positions at C1, progressing through C2, C3 – A&B, C4, C5, and culminating with CXOs.
Staff members holding positions in C3B and higher grades are typically classified as senior personnel.
TCS, with a workforce of approximately 6.8 lakh, recruited 625 employees from January to March, whilst adding 6,433 personnel throughout the fiscal year beginning April 2024.
The reduced QVA corresponds to the organisation’s and industry’s performance, particularly affected in the first quarter due to tariff implications that diminished anticipated business requirements.
During the quarter ending March, the IT leader delivered results below expectations, with net profit declining 1.68% year-on-year (YoY) and 1.26% sequentially to Rs 12,224 crore. Operational revenue increased by 5.3% YoY and 0.8% quarter-on-quarter to Rs 64,479 crore.

Business demand experienced a significant decrease across primary sectors including consumer, life sciences & healthcare, manufacturing, communications and media.
In the previous year, certain staff members experienced variable pay reductions for not complying with the Return-To-Office (RTO) directive requiring five days of office attendance weekly. TCS established a connection between QVA and minimum 85% office attendance for full quarterly variable pay eligibility. The organisation indicated that policy non-compliance could result in disciplinary proceedings.
